The holiday season has passed, but winter’s challenges are just getting started. Is your security ready?
At 360 Security Consultants, we know how important it is to protect your home or business during Northern Ontario’s harsh winters. With colder months come unique risks, but a few simple steps can ensure your property stays secure and gives you peace of mind.
Here are four common winter security mistakes — and how to fix them.
Forgetting to Update Outdoor Lighting
Short days and long nights make outdoor lighting critical. Poorly lit pathways and entry points invite trouble. Install motion-sensor lights or timers to create the illusion of activity, even when you're away. Solar-powered motion lights work wonders—we use them ourselves at our offices in Sudbury and North Bay. (Sault Ste. Marie already has fantastic parking lot lighting!)
Ignoring Lock Maintenance
If your house is at 20 degrees and its -30 outside, that’s a 50 degree difference with only the thickness of your door between them. Freezing temperatures can jam your locks, leaving you out in the cold. A quick spray of lubricant, like Lock Saver, prevents freezing and keeps locks functioning smoothly.
Overlooking Alarm Systems
If you’re like most people, you set your alarm system and forget it. But an unexpected power outage can expose vulnerabilities. Test your system and its battery monthly, and consider adding temperature and water sensors for extra peace of mind. If it’s been a while since your last check-up, now’s the time.
Neglecting Vehicle Security
Don’t leave your car out in the cold—literally or figuratively. Dark mornings and idling cars are easy targets for theft. Park in well-lit areas, keep valuables out of sight, and use a camera system for monitoring. Need a second key so you can lock your doors while it warms up? We can help.
Protect What Matters Most
Winter security doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does require a little preparation. Whether it’s updating locks, improving lighting, or testing alarms, we’re here to help.
Stay safe, stay warm, and let’s tackle winter together!
Warm regards,
Mike Pagnutti
