If you’re heading south for some sunshine this winter—good for you! Taking time to relax and recharge is important. But while you're soaking up the sun, bad guys are always on the lookout for easy opportunities. The good news? A few simple steps can make sure your home isn’t one of them.
Let’s go over the essentials.
1. Make It Look Like Someone’s Home
A dark, quiet house is a welcome sign for bad guys. Before you go, set up timers for a few lights or use smart bulbs you can control remotely. If you usually park in the driveway, ask a neighbor to use the spot while you’re away—it’s a small detail, but it can make a big difference.
Pause your mail, have a friend pick it up, or use a service to hold deliveries. Packages piling up at the door? That’s another dead giveaway that no one’s around.
2. Keep That Driveway Looking Active
Fresh snowfall is beautiful—but if your driveway is the only one on the block that hasn’t been cleared, bad guys will take notice. If you’ll be away for a while, arrange for snow removal or ask a neighbor to shovel for you. Even a few tire tracks in the driveway can help make your home look occupied.
3. Hold Off on Posting Vacation Pics
It’s tempting to share that beach sunset in real time, but bad guys are always watching for signs that a house is empty. Instead, wait until you’re back to post those vacation highlights.
If you really want to share, keep your audience small—close friends and family only. And if you have security cameras, some allow you to check in and even share a live feed of your home for added peace of mind.
4. Smart Security = Worry-Free Travel
The best way to truly relax on vacation? Knowing your home is protected. A video doorbell lets you see who’s at your front door, motion-activated cameras send real-time alerts, and smart locks allow you to double-check that everything is secure—even if you’re thousands of miles away.
(One of our customers once caught a thief in the act while they were on vacation—thanks to their camera system. Nothing like stopping bad guys from stealing while you’re enjoying the sunshine.)
Before You Pack Your Bags…
Taking a few extra steps before you leave can make all the difference in keeping bad guys away. If you need a lock upgrade, smart security solutions, or just some expert advice, we're here to help.
Because the only thing you should be worrying about on vacation is whether you packed enough sunscreen.
Safe travels!
